She and I both work in a warehouse office for an HVAC contractor. The office dress is casual...jeans and shirt (no t-shirts), sneakers ok. Everyone in the company is forbidden to wear sandals or any open toed shoes due to company policy and OSHA regulations.
The situation....
The receptionist in this office has recently started wearing crocs to work every single day. She spends most of the day in the front office answering the phone, filing, and playing games. Sometimes she has to go to into the warehouse to inform someone of a delivery or incoming phone call. I think it is inappropriate for her to wear these shoes at work since there is no protection from the metal objects in the warehouse. Should I report her to the boss? btw...aren't crocs a type of sandal?
Crocs shoes.......on the job???
I have a pair of crocs and wear them all the time, even at work. The dress code here is rather relaxed so wearing them is ok. You said the dress code is casual so the crocs should be fine.
As far as the warehouse goes...she is the receptionist so her being out there is only long enough to locate warehouse personnel and pass on messages. She doesn't actually work in the warehouse all day so her crocs shouldn't be a problem. If it really bothers you casually mention to her that the crocs could be dangerous out there so she might want to keep a spare pair of shoes at her desk. You could also suggest paging the person (intercom) in question or buzzing them if you all use 2-way radios (walkie talkie).
Reply:Crocs are shoes...don't be a snitch.
Reply:you should report her to the fashion police.
Reply:the rules state "no open-toed shoes". Crocs are not open-toed. I would worry about more important things. If she gets hurt, she gets hurt.
Reply:Yes, crocs are a type of sandal, but they are also a clog. It doesn't seem like she is in a position where the items in the warehouse would injure her. I wouldn't worry about it, but you might consider mentioning to her about having a pair of sneakers available when she needs to spend more time in the warehouse.
Reply:I don't think this has anything to do with the shoes. I do think it's actually about you whining and complaining because it seems that the receptionist is getting paid freetime (assumming she finishes her work early) and you don't.
Now, if she is actually loaded down with work and not doing it then she needs to be fired plain and simple.
Reply:You should mention it to your boss from the point of view that his safety rule is incorrect. It should not be open toed shoes, it should be shoes that expose any part of the bottom of the foot, heel, or toes.
Also think, if she does get hurt, you are going to feel real bad and when she sues your boss, it might be your job getting cut that pays the bill.
Reply:Mind your own business.
Reply:I think Crocs are inappropriate for the workplace (but the things are so darn comfy!). Maybe this is an opportunity for you to ask her if she's having foot trouble. You could say "I noticed you have been wearing your sandals (call them this instead of Crocs - trust me) to work lately. Are you having foot trouble?" or "Are your feet swollen so you can't get them into your work shoes?" Maybe that will give her the hint.
If this doesn't work and you really feel that it's a safety hazard, you should say something to the boss. But be casual about it so it doesn't look like you're tattling. Good luck! :)
Reply:Crocs are definitely sandals. Maybe ask her casually if she's allowed to wear sandals on the job, since company policy says she can't. Maybe she doesn't realise that they qualify as sandals.
Reply:I think they are more like a clog, are those allowed?
Reply:Why dont you just mind your own business. Be more concerned with your own job, not hers. You sound like somebody I would never want to work with. Stop being so petty. People like you make an otherwise pleasant job very unpleasant.
Reply:crocs shouldnt be worn to work regardless of the position in the company.
my mother works in a pool and wears crocs on deck. so i would consider them a type of sandal.
i think that a receptionist shouldnt wear crocs to work. it is disrespectful and unprofessional.
just my opinion. hope this helps.
Reply:I would mention something to her boss..not to get her in trouble but for the benefit of her safety. And yes crocs are a type of sandle but they offer more protection than say a flip flop..but they still dont offer as great as protection as a tennis shoe.
Reply:you should call her out right in front of the boss! Bad office girl!
