Is it too casual to wear flip-flips to an office with a casual dress code?

I understand these are becoming more fashionable. What are flip-flops anyway? Is there a difference between them and thongs? Between them and sandals? Is there some threshold that makes flip-flops "dressy" enough for the office? Where is that threshold?

One of my employees is wearing nice shoes, and is dressed nicely (for a casual environment). But somebody in a different department is complaining that she is wearing "flip-flops", but I'm not sure I agree. It's not a big deal to me if she's wearing whatever she wants. But I have to "enforce the policy" for the sake of my peer in the other department.

Bonus question -- Is this really the most effective use of my time??? Man, the pettiness of some people -- they got nothing better to do than look at people's feet???

Is it too casual to wear flip-flips to an office with a casual dress code?
If the flip flops are rubber or the ones you would wear at the beach or gardening then yes to casual, but I have nice sandals that have no backs and go in between the toes that I think would be considered flip flops. And yes I wear them with summer dresses. but it looks professional. So, there is a difference in flip-flops. As far as I'm concerned about the use of your time on this issue is I know it's petty, but if you don't enforce it soon it can get out of hand. I know because we go thru this at this office all the time. I do think job performance is more important than anything.

Reply:If you wear any kind of open-toe shoe to the office, please make sure you have nice-looking feet and get regular pedicures. There is nothing worse than having to look at someone's hideous feet. Report It

Reply:You sound like a reasonable and fair boss. Good for you! Report It

Reply:Sandals going between the toes, are considered flip-flops. If there could be a designation of this displayed in the employee handbook, it would not be such an issue.

Ask those who define the dress code.

If this woman looks fine to you, then she is following the dress code as you interpret it. Report It

Reply:Flip-flops should be worn at home or on the beach, not,in an office environment. Report It

Reply:I would FIRE anyone not taking their job serious enough and not presenting a decent workplace image. Report It

Reply:I work in a casual office environment where many of us wear the more dressy variety of "flip flop"-style sandal on a regular basis -- and no one ever seems to have a problem with it.

As long as you think she looks professional, who cares what this "tattletale" thinks. Report It

Reply:You should probably have a written definition of what is and is not acceptable. Once I would have said if you wouldn't wear it to church, you shouldn't wear it to the office. These days, that doesn't say much. Report It

Reply:open toed are bad deal in professional look not with safety codes most work environs. wear running shoes.

in good repair you are still at work.

even the company party is still at work

many make that mistake too!!!

not sure on things get a proefessional career advice type book.. Report It

Reply:i think if you want to wear them, carry on, life's to short to worrie about what other people think. Report It

Reply:Flip Flips? Now thats a new one...then again who the hell calls them Flip Flops. They are thongs or sandles and thats that. Report It

Reply:Flip flops should be avoided at all costs... even the beach, but if you must wear them then please buy a new pair once they start looking like some kind science fair project, make sure your feet are clean. Flip Flops just scream that you put no effort into your appearance. Report It

Reply:flip flops are ok if they are the nice ones. if they are the old navy rubber ones lets just say you'll be the one who everyone stares at. plus that horrible noise!!! Report It

Reply:Simply, Yes flip flops are to casual Report It

Reply:You seem like an awesome boss. We need more like you! Report It

Reply:Also, (and its just my opinion) I don't see where it's any of the other employees business whether or not she wears flip-flops as long as it's okay with you -- why? Because you are the boss. Report It

Reply:okay, for claritiy's sake, thongs are the same as flip flops, they have no backs or sides to them, and they have the one thing that goes between your toes. Report It

Reply:now, sandals can be anything that doesn't have a full shoe, from 'clogs', which cover only the front part of your foot, and have an open heel, to sandals that simply have a strap of fabric or leather that goes over the ball of your foot (right above your toes.) Report It

Reply:the thing you should be concerned about is what exactly your handbook says, is it all sandals? or just flip flops or thongs? our company says that you can't wear anything but shoes that cover your entire foot for insurance purposes. Report It

Reply:good luck!! hope you figure it out!!! Report It

Reply:Personally I think it's better to go by guidelines than strict rules in cases like this. Someone could wear a very nice pair of heels but come to the office looking like a whore. Inversely, someone could wear flip-flops yet still look nice and be a good example of what a dress code tries to achieve. Report It

Reply:Flip-flops are casual dress period. If your office has a typical dress code policy, it precludes casual dress which will clearly be defined in said policy. The list of unacceptable items usually includes any shoeware that could be considered substandard safety attire, ie, tennis or flip-flops, etc.
Reply:Foot fetishes are more common than you think, although then I don't think this person would be complaining about the 'flip-flops'

Dress codes are different wherever you go, check your company's policy. Usually flip-flops are not allowed in a corporate environment, even under casual dress code. And no, this is likely not an effective use of your time, but it comes with the territory.
Reply:yes, flip flops are too casual for an office with casual dress code

flip flops are made of polyurethane and look like you are going to the beach even the platform ones you find in victoria's secret.

it actually is quite useful of your time to find out what's appropriate for your office. really, some feet need to be kept under wraps and I personally look at everyone's feet that expose them. I can't help it.
Reply:Thier casual but I wouldn't wair them to work b/c they look sloppy and you should still come off pulled togeher. I would wear a nice shoe with jeans and either a button t or tshirt. Flipflops are they same as thongs but sandals don't go between ur toes like that.
Reply:If it's really a casual environment, then I don't see why Flip flops are such a big deal. As long as they are not endangering someone, and putting their safety on the line, it should be all good.

And yes, I do think THONGS, and SANDALS are all the same...

And stop wasting your time trying to please everyone... tell them to get to work! =)
Reply:yes
