Summer choice? Shoes vs Sandals vs Flip-Flops/Slides?

What looks best for a male urban college student who's just hanging around town with friends, yet wants to look good wherever he goes? I only started wearing flip flops publicly right before college because one day, I got lazy and wore them to school (while I was still in HS) instead of shoes. I got quite a few compliments from girls that day on how my feet looked compared to other guys (which at the time I never really considered), and now I'm addicted to flip flops. Though, there's the lingering feeling that I'm being looked down upon in public because of my choice in footwear.





No, I don't wear socks when I wear flip-flops or sandals. No, I'm not gay. But what I wear will affect others' opinions of me, and as a soon-to-be business manager/executive (hopefully), I have adopted a casual-luxury (Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren, JCrew) lifestyle in the past year so that I can prep myself to look professional (or well-maintained) in and out of a business suit. So... summer choice?

If you wear shorts, flip flops or slides go best. I have a few pairs of Reef flip flops that are really comfortable with great arch support. I also have New Balance and Adidas slides. The slides look a little more dressy for going out and the flips look great and feel great during the day.





If I am wearing jeans or khakis, sandals go best. I have some slip on sandals made of leather. They are easy to get in and out of, cover more of the foot, look more dressy, and are like walking on a cloud. These are a good choice if you want to still look casual and go to a nicer restaurant.





Don't let any idiots tell you that sandals, flip flops or slides are gay or just for the beach. This is completely untrue. If you look around, 2 out of 3 guys wear them during the weekends in the summer. Last I checked, only 5% of the population is supposed to be gay. I think flip flops have replaced boat shoes and sneakers as the new casual footwear for men. Girls even wear them to the prom now - you can wear them around town and still look professional. They are a smart look for guys.
Reply:I am surprised that with all this information you gave, one thing was missing. And to me it is one of the most important items to cover, no matter what kind of flip flops, slides or sandals you ware. Start at the beginning, because if you don't, nothing is going to look good on men, the same as it would not look good on a lady. Have the feet and toe nails done. If they look nice, you could go barefoot and people will compliment you. Try it, and I bet you will like it.
Reply:Well....In the summer sneakers can really make your feet hot and sweaty so, not sneakers. I would probably say...Flip-flops/slides.
Reply:For trends sake and the the fact that stores display them (in your face basically) I wear flip flops a lot but personally I prefer regular sandals such as teva or birkenstocks.

Reply:ok: for the summer I would say that sandals are probably best. but flip-flops have their place, ie: picnics, beach outings, walking the dog.





Sandals are better for casual dinners, gathering with friends at their residences, backyard BBQ, etc.





Shoes in summer: I'm not a fan. unless you are dressing for work, obviously or a wedding or something.





Sandals just say "yeah, this is me, casual, ready to enjoy some fun in the sun" and they don't have to be limited to Birks, or anything, you can find fashionable sandals in many outdoorsy-shoe shops.





whatever you do, don't wear Crocs..gross! who wants shoes they can put in a dishwasher.. those two words shouldn't ever even be in a sentence together!

Reply:I absolutely, unconditionally adore men who wear flip-flops. The whole look is relaxed and cool looking! I especially love the flip-flops that are made of canvas and have frayed edges. There is something confident and sexy about a guy who wears flip-flops and it's my first choice for male footwear unless the weather absolutely makes it seem irresponsible and ridiculous. Make sure to keep your footies lookin good though!
Reply:I'm not gonna lie i think it is HOT for guys to wear flipflops! They look good with jeans or anything casual. Definitely flipflops over sandals...sandals seem kinda gay to me, especially for a guy!

shoes are hot in the summer and not that comfortable, unless of course you are going to church or job interview etc and wear them for more dressing up
