What is considered business casual?

I am starting a new job and they say to dress business casual and i'm not quite sure what would all fall in that. Are sweaters or button up tops with black pants appropriate? How about shoes any suggestions? Any other suggestions as to what to wear? Thanks for the help.

What is considered business casual?
Sweaters and button up collared shirts are appropriate, slacks, and nice dress shoes, never sandals or tennis shoes. Another way to find out what is really appropriate for your office, is to dress conservatively your first couple weeks and check out what other people are wearing. You might see something that you thought you couldn't wear. People that have been working there for a while should know the dress code. GOOD LUCK with your new job.
Reply:i think the only difference is that you can wear khakis and the ladies could wear open-toed shoes with the option of wearing pantyhose. Also jackets for men may be optional.
Reply:That would absolutely work. Business casual is no jeans, no shorts, and skirts should be at least knee length. No flip-flops, tank tops, or t-shirts with logos or pictures on them. Basically, the minimum of dressiness that you want to go for is AT LEAST khakis and a long sleeved nice shirt, but I think your idea of a sweater and black pants sounds perfect.
Reply:I think you should wear maybe some black slacks... a white buttoned down shirt. Tie or no tie, you decide... and some black loafers.
Reply:Dress pants...nice shoes..not sneakers...and a collared shirt
Reply:Why don't you just ask them what they mean? When certain jobs say "business casual" they could mean many different things.
Reply:At first I would suggest dressing on the conservative side until you're able to see what you new co-workers are wearing.

So, I'd go with a button-up shirt, and any kind of pants that are not jeans.

Any shoes that are actually shoes (not sneakers or athletic shoes) ought to be fine.
Reply:Business casual is like slacks with a decent blouse and possibly heels or flats. You don't want to go all "business, lawyer" with the suits and all that. Yep, sweaters, black pants, and button-ups are perfect. Try pumps with small heels, not too high...about 4 inches at the most. Dressy flats are also classy but nice as well.
